Dental Bone Grafts

When placing dental implants, it is necessary to have healthy bone in the right position for the implant to be successful. When a tooth is extracted or missing the bone will recede in the extraction area causing inadequate bone volume. Many times, this can be prevented or corrected with dental bone grafting.

Bone Preservation Graft

The first type is a bone preservation graft to prevent bone loss from a tooth extraction. This is done at the time of the initial extraction to preserve the integrity of the jaw at the extraction site. Normally, graft material is placed in the extraction site and allowed to heal 4-6 months prior to the implant being placed.

Bone Replacement Graft

The second type is a bone replacement graft to rebuild missing jawbone that has already receded because of missing teeth. In this case, the bone loss could be a loss of height (vertical) or loss of width (horizontal) but both are equally important and necessary when placing dental implants. Vertical bone loss is very difficult to correct but with the right positioning of the implant and the type of restoration used can look like your natural tooth. Horizontal bone loss is more predictable to correct. Many times, bone grafting can restore the natural contours to allow for proper positioning of the dental implant again resulting in a natural and healthy tooth replacement.

Common Bone Grafting Questions

What should I expect after bone grafting?

Either type of grafting for dental implants will require 4-6 months so the grafting can integrate and become part of your jawbone before an implant is placed. Normally minimal discomfort or swelling may be experienced in the first 3-5 days requiring over-the-counter pain medicine. We do recommend not putting pressure or chewing on the new bone until the new tooth is in place. After the initial healing, the graft area will feel normal and comfortable.

Where does the bone come from?

Bone grafting for dental implants can come from several different sources. It can come from a different part of the body, cadaver bone from a tissue bank, animal bone, or lab-made fake bone. While we find that your own bone or cadaver bone works best for most bone grafts, we will discuss what type of graft will be best for you.
